How to Get Your Recreational Vehicle Ready for Spring
Warmer weather is constantly on our minds, and now is a good time to prepare your recreational vehicle for springtime. You’ll need to make sure that your RV is ready for your first trip back on the road with the following tips:
Wash and Detail
- If there are black streaks on the RV, use a black streak remover to remove them.
- Wash the undercarriage of your RV. You can purchase extendable brushes to make it easier.
- Clean your wheels so that they’ll shine.
- Polish metal on your RV using a high-quality metal polish.
- Use a specialized awning and vinyl cleaner to clean your awning. It’ll remove mold, stains, and mildew.
Inspection
Inspect your RV. You’ll want to check the seams of the roof for missing or cracked sealant. You may need to remove the current sealant and replace it with new sealant. Be sure to check the corners of your RV and the sidewall seams as well.
Battery
Inspect the battery to see if it has any cracks. The battery may have frozen during cold temperatures. You’ll need to replace the battery if it has any cracks. If you don’t see any cracks, you’ll want to disconnect and clean the battery connections with cleaner. Check the fluid levels in the battery, and charge the battery until it’s fully charged. Lastly, place the battery back where it belongs.
Tire and Wheel Maintenance
Check the air pressure in each tire. If the air pressure doesn’t meet the recommended pounds per square inch, you’ll need to inflate them until it does. Be sure to check your tires for cracks and dry rot from storage. Remember, you’ll need to tighten all of the lug nuts on each wheel before you use your RV again.
Brakes
If your RV has electric brakes, you’ll need to check them. They may need to be manually adjusted.
Filters and Fluids
If you did not check the automotive fluids and filters prior to storing your RV, you’ll need to do that now. Check fluid levels for your brakes, coolant and windshield washer fluid. You need to make sure that each is filled to the recommended level.
