Experience the Wonders of the Iconic Route 66

When traveling via RV, you never know what kind of adventure you’ll find. The American roadways are filled with great sights and off the beaten path side shops, but out of all the U.S. highways, there isn’t one that is known more for its roadside attractions than the famed Route 66. Running from Chicago to California, this historic route was a prime choice for travelers making their way across the country during the ‘40s and ‘50s. It became a breeding ground for quirky attractions, such as the World’s Biggest Bottle of Ketchup, and drew in tourists with its tasty American food joints. Following its initial shut down in 1985, the iconic route is now open to the public once again, along with many of its popular shops and restaurants. Plan a trip along the legendary Route 66 for your next RV outing and experience a slice of American history.

From natural wonders to man-made attractions, there’s so much to see and enjoy when traveling on Route 66. The parts of the highway that pass through Arizona alone make their way past the Petrified Forest National Park, which is known for its colors and Late Triassic fossils, a 550 deep meteor crater, the Wigwam Village Motel No. 6, complete with teepee rooms, and Oatman, Arizona, a “living” ghost town. Amarillo, Texas is also home to a few iconic spots worth checking out on Route 66, such as Tyler’s Barbeque, which is touted to have the world’s best bbq, and Cadillac Ranch, a piece of automotive art constructed in 1974, which visitors are encouraged to spray paint.

If you’re interested in a roadside attraction along the lines of the World’s Biggest Bottle of Ketchup, you can stop by Oklahoma’s very own Blue Whale of Catoosa. It was built by Hugh Davis in the 1970’s as an anniversary present for his wife and has since become a significant fragment in Route 66’s history. Like the whale, the Route 66 Drive in Theater is also well cemented in the highway’s roots and is a good way to cap off a day of travel.

Route 66’s notorious roadways are a cross country traveler’s dream. Take in everything it has to offer by going on a one-of-a-kind RV excursion through its infamous locations and you’ll be sure to have a trip to remember.
