5 Essential Camping Tips
Camping is a great way to take a road trip with your family members and friends and enjoy spending time surrounded by nature. Although camping is an ideal way to spend more time outdoors, there is plenty of prep work involved to make it a smooth process and have what you need on hand. When you’re planning a trip, there are a few camping tips to follow.
1. Create a Flexible Itinerary
Although it’s important to plan activities during your trip, you’ll still want to have a flexible itinerary to ensure that you can go with the flow and avoid feeling overwhelmed by having a busy schedule. Consider going hiking, kayaking, and exploring with a pair of binoculars to ensure that you can stay busy and don’t spend all of your time in the RV. Allowing yourself to sleep in or have a change in your schedule is necessary to ensure that you spend all of your time enjoying what you’re in the mood for when you’re in the wild.
2. Create a Checklist
Make a checklist of all of the items that need to be packed for your adventure, which includes a few unique essentials. You’ll need bug spray, sunblock, and food items that can be cooked over an open fire. Additional items to pack include a fishing rod, a canteen, a water filtration product, duct tape, a first aid kit, plenty of trash bags, a raincoat, a pocket knife, and matches or a lighter. Snacks should also be on hand to take while hiking or when you’re away from the campsite.
3. Prepare for the Drive
Traveling to your camping destination means that you’ll likely spend several hours in the RV on the road and will want to stay entertained. Consider bringing board games to play with your family or a travel journal to document your experience. Music and movies are also ideal if you have a multimedia system and a television in the vehicle. You can also decide if you want to make stops at different landmarks or attractions after mapping out the route that you plan to take to ensure that you can enjoy having a few breaks.
4. Practice
Practicing specific tasks that you’ll need to do while camping will make it a smoother experience. You’ll want to practice setting up your tent and putting it together in your backyard to increase your confidence and learn how to use the parts. You can also practice creating a bonfire or cook certain meals, which will prevent complications when you’re limited on resources in the great outdoors. Learning how to use a compass and increasing your sense of direction can also pay off before going camping.
5. Clean Along the Way
Although you may be on vacation while you’re away from home on your camping trip, it’s important to clean as you go to prevent a large mess from developing at the campsite. Leaving food out after you’ve enjoyed a meal with your family can invite unwanted critters and animals, which includes bears. The coolers should be put away at night, and all trash should be placed in the right containers and sealed to prevent animals from having access to everything that you discard. Using a tablecloth that is easy to wipe down will also prevent bugs from being attracted to the picnic bench or table where you eat throughout the day.
